Each room has a different kind of requirement and different dos and don’ts which you need to follow:

The Children’s room:

Depending upon the interior of your room or going completely different you can design the wallpaper, posters or paintings. The bedding, curtains, and rugs can express each kid's individuality, as can mobiles, cabinets with open shelves or closet doors.

The Guest Room:

The next fun place to decorate is the guest room, you can pick a theme for the room and place the things accordingly or go for a simple and yet stylish room. Go for neutral shades which are calming and yet welcoming to the guests for their pleasant stay at your home.

The Master Bedroom:

If the children are still young parents usually opt for the master bedroom to be closer to the kid’s room. A good design will work in the dimensions of major pieces of furniture and factor these into the plan. There are many tiny details which you need to keep in mind while planning your master bedroom, such as how do you want the furniture to be placed, what kind of lighting do you prefer, and what will be the theme of the room.

Here is a list of some simple Dos and Don’ts which you can follow while designing your bedroom:

Do’s of designing your bedroom:

  1. Your bed should be a place of relaxation and calm and not a place of work and entertainment. So, it is important to separate the bed from where you work or watch television.

  2. We always have a lot of things to store and the number of these items goes on increasing as and how the time passes. Therefore, you should try to maximize the storage space whenever you can. Instead of opting for scrawny night tables get ones that have drawers. A smart idea of maximizing the storage space can be to add storage boxed under the bed.

  3. You should definitely create a focal point in the room. In most of the rooms, the focal point is the bedroom, or use a nice headboard or put something decorative above it like a piece of art. This will help ground the room and give your eye a place to rest.
  4. A bedroom should be a place where you can relax, but you can also make the décor more exciting by adding a decorative feature. It can be a great wall piece or patterned bedsheets.
  5. Want you feel your feet feel warm and soft as soon as you wake up, add a soft rug or floor mat to the bedroom. Since area rugs are easy to remove and clean you can still get a soft feeling underfoot without the negative aspects of wall-to-wall carpet.
  6. Do install dimmer light switches, this will surely come in handy when you are getting ready for bed or just waking up. Glaring lights give you a sense of discomfort and take away from your relaxed mindset. Dimmer switches allow you to completely control the amount of light and create a relaxing atmosphere.
  7. Make your room a clutter-free zone. Try to keep the nightstand and other places free of any unnecessary items. A cluttered space does not create a relaxed atmosphere so you should not over accessorize.
  8. Make it a point to invest in a high-quality mattress, this one of the most important dos and if you don’t sleep well, you’ll never appreciate a well-designed bedroom.
  9. It is also important to install the right window treatments. If you are someone who is a light sleeper install shades or curtains which will block out the bright light. You can go for medium or light shades if you like a little dim and extra light in the room.
  10. Do choose pieces with the right scale. For example, in a bedroom with high ceilings, a tall headboard is a smart choice.
  11. If you have space in your room you can incorporate a chair, or bench or another place for sitting.

Don’ts of designing your bedroom:

  1. Don't overcrowd your room, go for just the basic requirements such as a bed, night table, and some storage facilities. Don't add furniture just for the sake of having it. Every piece that is placed in the room should have a definite purpose.
  2. Try to avoid decorating with bright and bold colors. Since bedrooms are about promoting sleep and relaxation you want colors that will help reduce stress such as soft neutrals. However, don’t stop yourself from choosing a color of your choice but just go for softer tones.
  3. If you are looking to add value to your home don't use carpets. People tend to associate carpet with dust and germs. It used to be popular earlier but is not much in demand nowadays.
  4. It is important to not ignore the importance of multiple light sources. It is important to add an overhead light, but don't just stick to an overhead light, you also add lights on the side of the bed. They can be table lamps, sconces, or even hanging fixtures. Just make sure there’s enough clearance so you don’t hit your head. If you have a sitting area in the bedroom you should also add a light for reading.
  5. Don’t use your bedroom to experiment with every new style that you see in magazines or on social networking sites. If there is too much going on in one space it can mess with your head and not allow you to rest peacefully.
  6. Don’t compromise on the bedding of your room. Luxury linen is a great investment because they create a spa-like feel in your bedroom. Plus, high-quality bedding will far outlast cheaper options and give your bedroom a designer look.
  7. Don’t put an exercise equipment in your bedroom unless it is absolutely necessary. In most cases, it will become a wardrobe hanger and is not conducive to a restful environment.
  8. It is important that there is some distance between your bedroom and the living room to give you some sense of privacy. If your plan allows trying to incorporate the same.
  9. Don’t add an oversized bed in your bedroom, although it may seem very attractive to you in the shop it tends to occupy a lot of unnecessary space of your room jarring the focal point of your bedroom.
  10. While arranging your room you need to keep in mind not only space but also the acoustics. If you position your bed against a wall separating your bedroom from the entertainment room or place your study desk near the door to a high-traffic hallway, you encourage noise to disturb your zen. Before you back your design plan and furniture up against a wall, assess their prime locations to avoid unwelcomed acoustics.

Here was a list of some simple dos and don’ts which you need to keep in mind while designing your bedroom. You need to also consider various other factors such as the size of your room, your budget, the theme of the room and the overall décor of the space before designing the room.
